Reviews about Microworx

January 04, 2019, by Thomas Graham
I'm trying to be fair and reasonable in my assessment of my experience with this company so I'll leave it up to others to judge if I have succeeded. A couple of months ago my cat knocked over a wine glass (my bad for having both the wine and the cat anywhere near my laptop in the first place) on to my laptop keyboard. There was no more than a tablespoon in the glass and only affected the lower left-hand few keys (caplock, shift, control). Within a short time they were sticking and causing problems. Microworx (being highly reviewed and recommended by others), seemed a reasonable solution. Upon entering the business, everyone was very polite and professional which made for a very positive first impression. Kudos all around. Since I use this laptop exclusively for business, I decided to use their "expedited" service for an additional $50 for a total of $100 all-in at the time of drop-off. Later, I received a voicemail message from the same young man from behind the counter with the following: "Unfortunately Mr. Graham the liquid has entered and corrupted the main circuit board behind the keyboard. Because the keyboard and circuit board are fused together as a single unit ... the cost is prohibitive to repairing your laptop." In other words, "Mr. Graham, you're SOL" (my words NOT his). When I picked up the laptop the next day I spoke directly to the tech who worked on my machine. Again, a very nice, professional guy. I asked him “Can you tell me definitively if liquid had entered the circuit board or not?” He told me that he had seen wine on the wires “leading” to the circuit board but no, did not see direct evidence it had in fact been corrupted. Again, I was told that the keyboard could not be replaced apart from the circuit board. Feeling like I had nothing to lose, when I got home I used a tooth brush and a little rubbing alcohol on the sticky keys and in less than ten minutes the keys (albeit it sluggish) were working again and have been ever since. Here’s my issue. I would think that for my $100 someone might have tried to clean the keys or at least suggested to me I had nothing to lose by trying it myself. Or, tried to connect the laptop to a wireless keyboard to confirm that the circuit board was damaged or not. Or still, even suggested using a wireless keyboard since the keyboard in the laptop couldn’t be replaced. When I called Microworx and asked precisely these questions, I was told “Well … we have no way of knowing if the liquid might affect the circuit board at some time in the future.” WHAT? I could have told you an asteroid might hit the Earth in the future too and at least I’d tell you for free. I guess for my $100 I expected some practical advice instead of feeling like they were no longer interest in my problem so long as a big repair fee wasn’t included. I can say however with absolute certainty, in the future I’ll find somewhere else for help.
